VALWAY Technology Center plays a role in developing applied research to apply the achievements of basic research obtained from universities and NEC Central Research Laboratories to solutions or products for the purpose of creating new high-risk and high-return technologies and business models. VALWAY Technology Center is also on a mission to support and contribute to business activities of departments across the NEC group, including Software Engineering. We conduct business development for the creation of business models and examine the feasibility of business opportunities through cooperation with related departments.
Promoting the next-generation biotechnology utilizing the IT: Aptamer
VALWAY Technology Center has focused on the possibility of using aptamers, as the next generation of sensors that contribute to new health care, for purposes such as detecting the sources and biomarkers of diseases and monitoring physical conditions. While a molecular biological approach is widely used to obtain aptamers, we found that software technologies are also applicable. We are currently pursuing new research and development that will lead to the generation of novel aptamers by combining experimental (wet) approach and computational (dry) approach.
Automatic human attributes analyzer
A computer can be a substitute for human eyes by analyzing video images automatically. In an effort to make use of this idea in a variety of applications, VALWAY Technology Center has been conducting research and development in the filed of image recognition technology toward a vision for achieving future solutions. We have particularly focused on the research of a technology that automatically identifies age and gender of a person detected from video images, and developed this technology jointly with Waseda University, NEC Central Research Laboratories, and NEC Laboratories America. After we conducted a number of demonstration experiments at shopping malls to develop it for practical use, this technology was finally commercialized as the automatic human attributes analyzer in October 2007. In addition to such a marketing application, this image recognition technology has the possibility of being applied in many fields, including security and user interface applications. We will also involve ourselves in research and development for bringing these new applications into reality.

About usability
Usability (quality in use) is the quality of a system from the user's point of view. By improving the quality based on the results of using a product and system from the user's perspective, in addition to improving the existing quality of a product and system such as functionality, reliability, and operability, a highly competitive product and system can be offered with enhanced customer satisfaction. The Usability Engineering Office of VALWAY Technology Center provides consulting and development support to aid in improving usability of products, services, and solutions offered by NEC Soft, Ltd. through the promotion of usability engineering.
Building a next-generation healthcare system for employees
The number of employees with metabolic syndrome and mental health problems are on the rise in recent years, which could not only increase a health risk, but also lead to a risk to the company's operations. VALWAY Technology Center promotes elemental technology research mainly in the mental health field, in the aim of building a next-generation healthcare system for employees to help maintain and manage their health by identifying employees' health problems at an early stage by means of centrally managing and utilizing information obtained through the in-house system and daily corporate activities.
